High Street Demolitions (184,188,192 N. High)

HighStreet

The Village of Covington will be demolishing the properties at 184, 188, and 192 N. High Street.  These properties were purchased over the last 5 years to be demolished to meet the requirements of the Ohio Department of Transportation and the High Street roadway project, which was completed in 2022.

Project History

HighStreetCulvert

As part of the funding for the High Street repavement project, which was substantially funded by ODOT, the Village was required to purchase and remove structures that were on top of the culvert which goes under High Street just south of US36.  These structures were purchased over the last 5 years. 184 and 188 N. High Street were purchased by the Village for the express purpose of meeting this requirement in 2018 under Ordinance 05-18.  As the Village discussed at many public meetings at the time, these homes would be purchased and demolished once funding was made available.

In 2022, the Village purchased 192 N. High Street, which was in unlivable condition, under Resolution R05-22.

Funding

The Village applied through Miami County for CDBG funding to have the properties removed, and in 2022 was granted $130,000 to abate the asbestos on the properties, structurally support 196 N. High Street, and to demolish and clean up the properties.  This funding will seed the sites with grass.

Future Plans

At this time the Village has no future plans for the site.  With the sites cleaned up, there are opportunities for redevelopment, but they are limited due to the inability to construct any structures over the culvert.
